Dyeing With Indigo and Other Garden Plants

Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 9:00am to 3:00pm

Fischer Greenhouse Lab Fischer Greenhouse Laboratory, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716, USA

Before the advent of synthetic dyes, many native and exotic plants were used as a source of color for fabric and yarns. Join gardener, spinner, weaver, horticulturist, and Mt. Cuba plant researcher Jeanne Frett for this hands-on class as we gather and explore the exciting dye potential of such plants as Japanese indigo, coreopsis, goldenrod, walnuts, and even broom sedge. Participants will dye yarn samples and cap off the day by dyeing three silk scarves to take home.

Please wear old clothes, bring a notebook, and a bag lunch. Limited to 15 participants. Registration and payment required prior to the workshop.
