IHRC "Transnational Encounters Visiting Writers Series"
The University of Delaware community will welcome Peruvian writer and Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa on Oct 31 and Nov 1.
The visit, which will include a public lecture on Thursday, Oct. 31, and readings in both English and Spanish on Friday, Nov 1, marks the second visit by a Nobel Laureate in Literature.
In May of 2012, French writer and 2008 Laureate Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio spoke on campus as part of a new visiting writers series, entitled Transnational Encounters: World-Renowned Authors at the University of Delaware.
The project, made possible through a $50,000 grant from the Interdisciplinary Humanities Research Center, aims to engage the UD community and general public with renowned writers whose works showcase rich cultural diversity.
Vargas Llosa was awarded the 2010 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature “for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual’s resistance, revolt and defeat.”
One of the world’s most celebrated writers, Vargas Llosa has written more than 30 works of nonfiction that examine power and corruption in Latin America, including The Feast of the Goat and The War of the End of the World.
He will deliver a keynote address in English in Clayton Hall on Thursday, Oct 31st at 5pm.
He will also be on campus Friday, Nov 1st, and will conduct readings of his works in Spanish (10:30 a.m.) and English (2:30 p.m.) at the Center for the Arts in Gore Recital Hall.
The Vargas Llosa events are organized and hosted by the Department of Foreign Languages &Literatures, with additional sponsorship from the Center for Global & Area Studies, the Institute for Global Studies, the English Language Institute, the Department of Political Science & International Relations and the Department of History, Student Life and the Center for Black Culture.
