War in History Series
"Military history" conjures up the study of tactics, generalship and lethal hardware. But in fact it is — or should be — much broader.
Societies devote time, energy and treasure to preparing for war and, unless they are fortunate, they pay a high, often ruinous, cost in blood and destruction when they actually fight. The ramifications of this effort touch every corner and aspect of society, from politics to gender relations and popular culture.
University of Delaware Professor Emeritus Raymond Callahan will deliver a series of lectures considering the broad contours of war in history on nine Friday afternoons beginning Oct. 5.
The lecture series will be held at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware in Wilmington, in 108 Arsht Hall, 2700 Pennsylvania Ave.
The series will run Oct. 5-Dec. 7, from 12:30-1:45 p.m. There will be no lecture on Nov. 23.
Callahan held the John F. Morrison Chair of Military History at the U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. An expert on military history, he authored five books, most recently Churchill and His Generals.
The lectures are free and open to the public, and no registration is required. For more information, call 302-573-4417.
