Abstract: In this talk, we will discuss some of the big ideas in arithmetic geometry, the area of mathematics that brings together number theory and geometry. We will begin by seeing how the Pythagorean theorem opens the door to one of the field's central questions: finding rational or integer solutions to equations defining curves. This theme runs through centuries of mathematics, from Diophantus's Arithmetica to Wiles's proof of Fermat's Last Theorem, and, even more recently, to the work of Balakrishnan et al on the so-called Cursed Curve.

The exhibition showcases more than 60 garments from the 1920s drawn from the Fashion and Textile Collection in the Fashion and Apparel Studies Department, along with digital twins, virtual reproductions of selected fragile garments.

In contrast to the restrictive Edwardian styles of the early 1910s, the chemise silhouette was more functional, offering women greater freedom of movement through its simpler shapes and rising hemlines. This simple silhouette and its variations provided a means of self-expression aesthetically, socially and culturally, as this period witnessed significant changes in women's clothing, driven by industrialization, women's suffrage and various artistic movements.

Fabrics and designs drew inspiration from Art Deco, jazz culture, Egyptian, African, Eastern European and Asian traditional dress, allowing women to convey their global awareness. At the same time, the expanding ready-to-wear industry made fashionable clothing more accessible than ever. Together, these forces cemented the 1920s as a pivotal moment in which clothing became a powerful medium for expressing individuality and freedom.

Victor Mallet Biography

Victor is a journalist, editor, commentator and author with more than four decades of experience in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. He is currently based in Paris and London as a senior editor on the Financial Times world desk. His new book, just published by Hurst in the UK and Europe and available in the US from March 15, is Far-Right France: Le Pen, Bardella and the Future of Europe, and is the result of recent reporting across France as well as his three separate stints as a correspondent in France. His previous book was River of Life, River of Death: The Ganges and India’s Future (OUP, 2017), while his highly praised analysis of the south-east Asian industrial revolution and the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis, The Trouble with Tigers (HarperCollins), was first published in 1999. Victor’s previous jobs include FT Asia editor in Hong Kong, bureau chief in Paris and postings in New Delhi and Madrid as well as coverage of the Middle East, Africa and south-east Asia. He twice won the Society of Publishers in Asia award for opinion writing. In India, he was twice awarded the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism as a foreign correspondent, for features on the rise of Narendra Modi and on the River Ganges.

Her work addresses issues of broad and immediate relevance, including disparities in health care access, environmental risks to children’s well-being, mental health, and the lasting impact of conditions during pregnancy and early childhood. Indigenous omission leads to prejudice and discrimination, and impact how Indigenous Peoples feel about themselves. Specifically, Professor Stephanie Fryberg shows that Indigenous omission shapes global attitudes towards Indigenous Peoples, as well as attitudes towards specific issues, including the use of redface and apathy towards Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls. We further illustrate that sensitivity to Indigenous omission adversely impacts Indigenous Peoples’ wellbeing but also galvanizes civic engagement. By making visible the pernicious consequences of omission and highlighting Indigenous agency and resistance to omission, we illuminate a path towards creating a more equitable future for Indigenous Peoples.

The Delaware 4-H State Camp experience provides lasting memories and the chance to make lifelong friends. Surrounded by nature, campers disconnect from technology and focus on developing life skills. Campers are assigned to a people group for afternoon and campfire activities. Classes are created by counselors, in the past have consisted of kayaking, arts & crafts, home economics, sports and fitness and archery just to name a few! Recreation time, such as swimming, playing basketball and volleyball, and kayaking, are included, Campers may only attend one session.

4-H Environmental Camp — June 5-7, 2026

This residential overnight experience allows campers to explore basic soil and environmental science curriculum through hands-on discovery. Campers will attend classes that allow them to get their hands dirty, explore the creek, or look for critters around camp. Who knew it was so much fun! Previous camp classes included topics such as, “Is River Water Safe to Drink? and “Digging Up the Dirt on Soil Microbes.” New classes are developed every year. Recreation time, such as swimming, playing basketball and volleyball, and kayaking, are included.

Ever wondered what's growing beneath the surface of Delaware's rivers, bays, ponds, streams and ditches? Well, there may be submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), and we need your help to find it! Join us for an engaging hands-on training to become a SAV Seeker—a community scientist helping to monitor the underwater grasses that sustain our waterways. This volunteer monitoring program will set you on the path to conduct comprehensive, adaptable transect-based monitoring effort across fresh and brackish waters, with ongoing support from dedicated Program Coordinators.

Your Journey to Becoming a SAV Seeker:

Part 1 (This Training): Classroom learning with hands-on activities
Part 2: In-field training at a monitoring site near you—we'll group participants by location
Part 3: Complete and pass an open-book knowledge test
Go Time: Start collecting data that contributes to Delaware's statewide SAV database!

What You'll Learn:

SAV Basics: Discover what makes SAV special, why it matters for Delaware's waters, and how volunteer monitoring supports restoration efforts

Plant Identification: Practice identifying Delaware's SAV species using identification keys and pressed specimens, learning to recognize key features like leaf shape, arrangement, and flowering parts

Field Methods: Learn how to set up monitoring transects, assess habitat conditions, measure water quality parameters, and document SAV coverage

Data Collection: Get trained on using Survey123 and iNaturalist apps, or paper datasheets to record your observations

Hands-On Practice: Participate in an outdoor field demonstration to practice the full monitoring protocol

What Happens After Part 1?

Based on your location (Sussex, Kent, or New Castle County), we'll coordinate Part 2 in-field trainings with groups of volunteers near you. This ensures you're learning at a site similar to where you'll eventually monitor and less travel time for you. The exhibition showcases more than 60 garments from the 1920s drawn from the Fashion and Textile Collection in the Fashion and Apparel Studies Department, along with digital twins, virtual reproductions of selected fragile garments.

In contrast to the restrictive Edwardian styles of the early 1910s, the chemise silhouette was more functional, offering women greater freedom of movement through its simpler shapes and rising hemlines. This simple silhouette and its variations provided a means of self-expression aesthetically, socially and culturally, as this period witnessed significant changes in women's clothing, driven by industrialization, women's suffrage and various artistic movements.

Fabrics and designs drew inspiration from Art Deco, jazz culture, Egyptian, African, Eastern European and Asian traditional dress, allowing women to convey their global awareness. At the same time, the expanding ready-to-wear industry made fashionable clothing more accessible than ever. Together, these forces cemented the 1920s as a pivotal moment in which clothing became a powerful medium for expressing individuality and freedom.

Through photographs, books, pamphlets and event programs, visitors will explore the rich and dynamic history of the Black church as a foundational educational institution, as well as the remarkable influence and activism of Black women working to expand educational opportunities, often in partnership with the independent Black church. Recognizing that 1776 is the beginning, not the end, of our American story, we invite you to discover how African Americans in Delaware built community, promoted education and thrived at the turn of the century in their ongoing pursuit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Lifting As We Climb is on view from February 2 through August 7, 2026, in the Morris Library Information Room. The exhibition is free and open to the public during the Library’s regular hours.

Abstract:

We develop probabilistic machine learning methods for tensor data whose entries are nonnegative, semi-continuous, and exhibit excess zeros, heavy right tails, and slice-varying dispersion. Such a structure arises in monetary-valued multiway arrays, such as international trade, where most cells of the exporter × importer × product × year tensor are zero while positive entries span several orders of magnitude. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model that combines a low-rank nonnegative CP decomposition with a compound Poisson--Gamma likelihood, and develop a hybrid variational--Monte Carlo algorithm for posterior inference, including an asymptotic approximation to a Bessel-family conditional that enables scalable computation for tensors with tens of millions of entries. Applied to international trade data, the model recovers interpretable multiway dependence across exporters, importers, products, and time that is inaccessible to methods operating on fewer tensor margins.

Ethan Sheehy, a recent graduate and electrical engineer in Sargent & Lundy’s nuclear group, works on supporting and upgrading existing nuclear plants for Dominion Energy. In this session, Ethan and other Sargent & Lundy engineers will provide an overview of the nuclear industry, highlighting the roles of electrical and I&C engineers in modernizing and maintaining nuclear facilities. They will also discuss the future of nuclear power, including plans for next-generation nuclear plants, and share insights about Sargent & Lundy as a firm and career opportunities for students interested in power and nuclear engineering.

Abstract: Agentic AI has rapidly grown in popularity, primarily because of the promise of no need for extensive coding and software development experience to develop task-based applications. More evaluation is needed to assess the risks ofusing such tools. This is especially true for safety-critical applications such as path planning which is a cornerstone of allrobotics applications and many navigation applications like those found in smartphones and vehicles. To this end, we first illustrate problems found in simply using large language models (LLMs) for navigation, both in vehicle and walking wayfinding scenarios. Then we assess the quality of path planning code generated from LLMS, as this is the supposed sweet spot for LLM utility. We then use these case studies to develop a hazard analysis of the use of LLMs for path planning application, especially those in safety-critical applications. Our results suggest that LLMs should not be used as a plug-and-play capability in agentic AI systems because they lack spatial reasoning. LLM-generated code also presentsserious hazards for path planning applications and should not be applied in safety-critical contexts without rigorous testing.

Bio: Professor Mary (Missy) Cummings received her B.S. in Mathematics from the US Naval Academy in 1988, her M.S. in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1994, and her Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2004. A naval officer and military pilot from 1988-1999, she was one of the U.S. Navy's first female fighter pilots. She is a Professor in the George Mason University College of Engineering and Computing and directs the Mason Responsible AI program as well as the Mason Autonomy and Robotics Center (MARC). She is an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics fellow and a member of the Virginia Academy for Science, Engineering and Mathematics. Her research interests include the application of artificial intelligence in safety-critical systems, assured autonomy, human-systems engineering, and the ethical and social impact of technology.

About the Presentation:

Drawing on work from the University of Delaware’s award-winning Coastal Resilience Design Studio (CRDS), this presentation highlights real-world projects across Delaware that address sea-level rise, flooding, erosion, and community disinvestment. It showcases how interdisciplinary teams of students, faculty designers, scientists, resource managers, consultants, elected officials and residences work together to research local conditions, co-create resilient solutions, and transform ideas into built outcomes.

Case studies—from beach erosion and wetland restoration to revitalized public spaces and local markets—demonstrate how creativity and design thinking can unlock innovation while honoring local heritage, culture and ecosystems. Emphasizing engagement, education, and partnerships, this presentation illustrates how empowering communities in the design process builds long-term capacity, fosters stewardship, and inspires adaptive solutions that help coastal comunities not just surivive, but thrive, in an uncertain future.

About the Speakers:

Ed Lewandowski - Coastal Communities Development Specialist

Ed is a Coastal Communities Design Specialist with the Delaware Sea Grant College Program and the coordinator of the University of Delaware's Sustainable Coastal Communities Initiative. He is also the co-founder and principal of the University's Coastal Resilience Design Studio. Ed is responsible for providing oversight and management for a variety of initiatives, including community-level land use planning, working waterfronts preservation and enhancement, economic development, government relations, public policy, open space protection, and marine recreation and tourism projects. Prior to joining the University, Ed spent 13 years with the non-profit Dealware Inland Bays National Estuary Program (Center for the Inland Bays), serving his final seven years with the organization as its Executive Director.

Ed holds a Master's degree in Organizational Leadership and obtained his undergraduate degree in Marine Biology. Ed has been appointed to a number of public commissions and councils including the Delaware Nutrient Management Commission, the Delaware Natural Areas Advisory Council, the Delaware Association of Professional Engineers, the board of directors of Sussex Habitat for Humanity, and the Delaware Parks & Recreation Council. He is also an award-winning landscape oil painter and an artist-partner at Gallery One in Ocean View, Delaware.

Zach Hammaker - Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture

Zach has been working with communities in the Delaware Valley for over a decade on design and adaptation strategies to respond to contemporary challenges of climate change and human impact, particularly in working landscapes- post-industrial, agricultural, and coastal. With his background in landscape architecture, environmental design and management, regional planning and public-private partnership development, he helps communities envision holistic futures that consider their social, economic, ecological, and cultural needs. As the Director of the Coastal Resilience Design Studio and Co-Founder of the Rural Futures Collaborative, he has expertise in participatory design and planning, engaged student scholarship, interdisciplinary collaboration, project steering, community advocacy and capacity building.

People with diabetes and their family members, caregivers and support persons can enroll in Dining with Diabetes. Anyone, with or without diabetes, can attend. This program is designed to complement, not replace, diabetes management classes.

Historian and writer Dr. Elyse Graham will deliver the keynote talk, How Bookworms Beat the Nazis, revealing the extraordinary and often-overlooked story of how scholars, librarians and academics helped shape the Allied victory during World War II.

Drawing from her acclaimed book Book and Dagger, Graham shows how knowledge, research and intellectual curiosity became powerful tools of intelligence and resistance. “The war may have been fought on the battlefields,” Graham writes, “but it was won in the libraries.” Her engaging storytelling brings history to life while celebrating the enduring impact of libraries and the people who champion them.

This special evening will honor nearly 70 years of generosity, advocacy and scholarship by the Friends of the University of Delaware Library. Their support has strengthened the UD Library, Museums and Press, enriched the collections and provided exceptional resources for students, faculty, researchers, and the community.

The evening begins with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m., during which copies of Book and Dagger and other manuscripts of Graham’s will be available for purchase through the UD Barnes & Noble Bookstore. Dinner will follow at 7 p.m., and the evening will conclude by 9 p.m. with a moderated conversation and audience Q&A with Elyse Graham.

Elyse Graham is an American historian and writer, currently teaching at Stony Brook University. She is a graduate of Princeton University, MIT and Yale University. Graham’s work bridges cultural history, media studies and the humanities, and her books include "Book and Dagger" (2024), "The Republic of Games", "A Unified Theory of Cats on the Internet" and "You Talkin’ to Me?"

Her work has been featured in The New York Times and Time Magazine, and she is known for bringing history vividly to life through engaging storytelling and rigorous scholarship. Graham explores how intellectual curiosity, scholarship, and knowledge can shape the course of history — a perfect fit for honoring the Friends of the University of Delaware Library and their enduring impact.

Collected by Moisei Beregovsky and other scientists of the Kiev Cabinet for Jewish Culture, these previously unknown Yiddish songs were confiscated and hidden by the Soviet government in 1949, and have only recently come to light. They tell stories of how Soviet Jews became refugees in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, lived and died under the German occupation, used music to document Nazi atrocities, fought in the Red Army, worked in the home front, and made sense of it all through Yiddish music. None of these songs were known until they were accidentally discovered in the basement of the Ukrainian National Library in the 1990s.

Anna Shternshis is the J. Richard and Dorothy Shiff Chair of Jewish Studies and director of the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto. She received her doctorate (DPhil) from Oxford University in 2001. Shternshis is the author of Soviet and Kosher: Jewish Popular Culture in the Soviet Union, 1923 - 1939 (Indiana UP, 2006) and When Sonia Met Boris: An Oral History of Jewish Life under Stalin (Oxford UP, 2017), co-author of Jews in the Soviet Union: A History: War, Conquest, and Catastrophe, 1939–1945 (NYU Press, 2022), and most recently Jews in the Soviet Union: A History: Life, Hope and Fears, 1945 – 1953 (NYU Press, 2026). Shternshis created and directed the Grammy-nominated Yiddish Glory project, an initiative that brought back to life forgotten Yiddish music written during the Holocaust in the Soviet Union. A recipient of 2020 Guggenheim Fellowship, she is currently working on a book tentatively entitled Last Yiddish Heroes: A Lost and Found Archive of the Holocaust in the Soviet Union about Yiddish music created in Nazi-occupied Ukraine.

Pavel Lion, a.k.a. Psoy Korolenko, is one of Russia’s most popular – and clever – songwriters, as well as a Grammy-nominated Yiddish singer, songwriter and scholar. Self-referred to as a ''wandering scholar'' and an ''avant-bard'', he is known for his multilingual one-person cabaret-esque shows, which balance folk and klezmer music, free-style poetry and intellectual comedy. Psoy writes and sings in English, Russian, Yiddish, and French. On stage since 2000, he has published one book of selected essays and song lyrics, ''The Hit Of The Century'', and 14 CDs – some of them in collaboration with active Jewish and Klezmer musicians ("Opa!", Daniel Kahn, Igor Krutogolov, "Oy Division"). Psoy is a member of the organizing committee for a Russian American music festival JetLAG, a guest of many klezmer music festivals, and an ex-artist in residence at the Trinity College (Hartford), The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA). An author of insightful and sophisticated Russian sung poetry, Psoy is also known for his keen and explorative vision of the art of translation, “tradaptation” and what he calls Spell-Art (i.e. playing with foreign text, emphasizing linguistic distances, multilingual songs etc).

Extreme physical confinement fundamentally reshapes microbiota structure and competition by modulating bacterial transport, for instance, in the intestinal crypts, which are preferentially targeted by infectious bacteria. Once a bacterium penetrates a narrow pore with a cross-section matching its width, the cell can enjoy long-term protection from fluid entrainment and large predators, such as immune cells. How steric exclusion and hydrodynamic forces influence single-cell access to such narrow spaces remains unknown. I will discuss our recent discoveries, revealing how motile bacteria use self-propulsion to transform rigid, narrow pores into virtual funnels, thereby facilitating penetration by several orders of magnitude. Virtual funneling is preceded by the cell scanning the surface for an opening, a process analogous to an RNA polymerase decreasing the dimensionality of its search for a promoter via a random walk along the DNA. Strikingly, we have observed that extreme confinement increases the swimming speed of specific types of bacteria by 100-150%, a discovery that is at odds with expectations of decreased motility given the 30-50-fold increase in viscous drag within the pore. We have leveraged such species-specific motility characteristics to develop an Artificial Intelligence-Imaging platform for 2-minute bacterial phenotyping, opening new avenues for continuous monitoring of antibiotic resistance and infections. I will discuss how these discoveries underpin and advance emerging frontiers in microbial adaptation, enzymatic catalysis, biofilm formation, and immune cell-bacterial interactions.

The exhibition showcases more than 60 garments from the 1920s drawn from the Fashion and Textile Collection in the Fashion and Apparel Studies Department, along with digital twins, virtual reproductions of selected fragile garments.

In contrast to the restrictive Edwardian styles of the early 1910s, the chemise silhouette was more functional, offering women greater freedom of movement through its simpler shapes and rising hemlines. This simple silhouette and its variations provided a means of self-expression aesthetically, socially and culturally, as this period witnessed significant changes in women's clothing, driven by industrialization, women's suffrage and various artistic movements.

Fabrics and designs drew inspiration from Art Deco, jazz culture, Egyptian, African, Eastern European and Asian traditional dress, allowing women to convey their global awareness. At the same time, the expanding ready-to-wear industry made fashionable clothing more accessible than ever. Together, these forces cemented the 1920s as a pivotal moment in which clothing became a powerful medium for expressing individuality and freedom.

ABSTRACT

Modern computing platforms increasingly rely on GPUs to provide the performance, bandwidth, and memory capacity required by data-intensive workloads, from cloud and edge services to large language models (LLMs) and emerging quantum applications. In this talk, I will present our recent efforts to unlock the full potential of GPU computing. I will highlight several key innovations, including lightweight page translation invalidation, short-circuited page table walks, and flexible reconfiguration strategies for multi-instance GPUs (MIG), which together significantly improve performance and efficiency. I will also discuss our work on advancing GPU computing for edge AI. These innovations point toward the next generation of GPU systems designed to power increasingly intelligent and data-driven applications.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Xulong Tang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pittsburgh. His research spans computer architecture and systems, with a focus on GPU architectures, scalable memory management, and heterogeneous computing across high-performance, edge, and quantum systems. His group has pioneered advances in GPU memory management, temporal graph neural network training, and quantum compilation. Dr. Tang has published extensively in premier venues such as MICRO, HPCA, ISCA, ASPLOS, PLDI, ICLR, and NeurIPS. He is also active in the community, serving as General Co-Chair of ASPLOS 2026 and Vice Chair of the IEEE Micro Top Picks 2025 Selection Committee.

This concert will take you back to the very beginning of our medium—when percussion first stepped out of the background and claimed the spotlight. Featuring some of the first works ever written for percussion ensemble, this program celebrates the visionary composers who pioneered an entirely new musical language. At a time when Western percussion was rarely heard outside the orchestra’s back row, these innovators imagined an ensemble built entirely on rhythm, color, and texture—and changed the course of music history. From groundbreaking experiments in sound to electrifying rhythmic conversations, these early works are as daring and alive today as they were at their premieres.

Join us for an evening that honors the pioneers of the percussion ensemble repertoire in a rare chance to experience the origins of a musical revolution. The program will include works by Varese, Roldan, Cowell, Russell, and Beyer and feature John Cage’s rarely performed 1942 radio drama "The City Wears a Slouch Hat."

The exhibition showcases more than 60 garments from the 1920s drawn from the Fashion and Textile Collection in the Fashion and Apparel Studies Department, along with digital twins, virtual reproductions of selected fragile garments.

In contrast to the restrictive Edwardian styles of the early 1910s, the chemise silhouette was more functional, offering women greater freedom of movement through its simpler shapes and rising hemlines. This simple silhouette and its variations provided a means of self-expression aesthetically, socially and culturally, as this period witnessed significant changes in women's clothing, driven by industrialization, women's suffrage and various artistic movements.

Fabrics and designs drew inspiration from Art Deco, jazz culture, Egyptian, African, Eastern European and Asian traditional dress, allowing women to convey their global awareness. At the same time, the expanding ready-to-wear industry made fashionable clothing more accessible than ever. Together, these forces cemented the 1920s as a pivotal moment in which clothing became a powerful medium for expressing individuality and freedom.

Recognizing that 1776 is the beginning, not the end, of our American story, we invite you to discover how African Americans in Delaware built community, promoted education and thrived at the turn of the century in their ongoing pursuit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Lifting As We Climb is on view from February 2 through August 7, 2026, in the Morris Library Information Room. The exhibition is free and open to the public during the Library’s regular hours.

Wendy K. Smith is the recipient of the University of Delaware's 2025 Francis Alison Award.

She is the Dana J. Johnson Professor of Management at UD. A fellow of the Academy of Mangement, she has been on Clarivate's list of Highly Cited Researchers for seven consecutive years, an international designation that recognizes scholars whose publications rank among the top 1% of citations worldwide. Smith was named one of the Top 50 Management Thinkers for 2025 and received the Thinkers50 Breakthrough Idea Award in 2023. She earned her doctoral degree at Harvard University/Harvard Business School in 2006 and her undergraduate degree at Yale University.

Smith studies how leaders manage complexity, especially thorugh the lens of paradox theory, which shows that leaders make more effective, creative decisions when they use "both/and" thinking to navigate opposing forces — such as purpose and profit, stability and change, collaboration and competition. Along with co-author Marianne Lewis, she integrates 25 years of research in her recent book Both/And Thinking: Embracing Creative Tensions to Solve Your Toughest Problems.

The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Center for the Arts Lobby. Registration is requested.

Discover a cost-effective way to create a stylized meadow on a small property using native plant plugs. You’ll learn the differences between a traditional and stylized meadow, the advantages of using plugs, and how to scale meadow landscape design principles to a suburban yard.

To help you get started you’ll receive a 2" native plug set as part of this class. Each set contains 5 different species & 15 plants in total. The workshop and plants are limited to 45 participants. Plants must be picked up at the workshop.

Knittle rethinks aging in place to frame it as a municipal problem, not a private one. Pairing archival research on municipal and mutual aid programs for older homeowners with an analysis on two literary texts, he will trace how the effects of 20th century histories of racial housing inequality are intensified in the lives of homeowning older adults and will consider the way many older adults respond by reimagining the contexts in which they stay in their homes.

Knittle came to UD in January 2023 from Princeton University, where he was HMEI/Princeton Mellon Fellow in Architecture, Urbanism, and the Environment. His scholarship has been recently published or is forthcoming in PMLA, ISLE: Interdisciplinary Studies in Literature and Environment, Gotham: A Blog for Scholars of New York City History, and elsewhere. His first book project, Urbanist Desire: Queer and Trans Survival in the City, describes how writers used the tools of city planning to resist predatory redevelopment in New York from 1950 to 2020 and will be published in November 2026 by University of Minnesota Press.

The Delaware 4-H State Camp experience provides lasting memories and the chance to make lifelong friends. Surrounded by nature, campers disconnect from technology and focus on developing life skills. Campers are assigned to a people group for afternoon and campfire activities. Classes are created by counselors, in the past have consisted of kayaking, arts & crafts, home economics, sports and fitness and archery just to name a few! Recreation time, such as swimming, playing basketball and volleyball, and kayaking, are included, Campers may only attend one session.

4-H Environmental Camp — June 5-7, 2026

This residential overnight experience allows campers to explore basic soil and environmental science curriculum through hands-on discovery. Campers will attend classes that allow them to get their hands dirty, explore the creek, or look for critters around camp. Who knew it was so much fun! Previous camp classes included topics such as, “Is River Water Safe to Drink? and “Digging Up the Dirt on Soil Microbes.” New classes are developed every year. Recreation time, such as swimming, playing basketball and volleyball, and kayaking, are included.

“Mike” has held various positions throughout his career. He retired as the Deputy Assistant Director, C5I portfolio, within the newly reorganized AFC C5ISR Center, Engineering and Systems Integration Directorate. He was responsible for managing and providing leadership spanning R&D, Sustainment Engineering and Acquisition Management support for Army Satellite, Tactical Communications, Fires, and Key Management Systems. Prior to that he was the Deputy Director of the C5ISR Center Intelligence and Information Warfare Directorate (I2WD) assisting the Director in leading an organization of 8 Divisions, a workforce of over 1000 Government and Contractor employees and a total Mission & Customer budget of $1+B.

Healing Communities: Nutrition, Movement, and Mental Wellness

Join us for an interactive workshop with emerging evidence connecting nutrition, physical activity, and mindfulness in practice. Explore how food, movement, and nervous system calming techniques influence mood, stress regulation, and cognitive health. Learn practical, accessible strategies that can integrate into patient support, community wellness initiatives, and self-care practices.

Based on the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) for social work education, participants will also examine how structural inequities, such as food access, environmental stressors, and health disparities, affect mental health outcomes in marginalized communities, and how culturally responsive wellness strategies can support healing and resilience.

We welcome all students, practitioners, and the broader University of Delaware community!

Presenter: Danielle Medina, BS is the founder of Fit N Play Mama LLC and a Certified Food for Life Nutrition and Culinary Educator through the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. She is a nutrition educator, culinary medicine instructor, corrective exercise specialist, and lifestyle wellness coach whose work bridges nutrition science, movement, and nervous system regulation.

Title : "Framing Circularity in the Plastics Landscape"

Abstract : Polymers are ubiquitous in the modern world, and the demand for and production of plastics products continues to climb. Historically, the chemical manufacturing of plastics has focused on key features, such as durability, low-cost, and multifunctionality; however, these aspects also challenge current interventions to combat the plastics waste dilemma. I will overview plastics sustainability from the perspective of transitioning from a linear to a circular economy, addressing macromolecular diversity and plastic waste complexity, reducing dependence on petroleum feedstocks, and maintaining (or improving) material performance.

Abstract : This talk pays homage to one of the world’s leading innovators in the area of polymer sustainability by discussing the integration of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and systems engineering in order to address challenges in polymer sustainability. The talk will discuss the systems-level challenges that drive how polymers are actually disposed and engineering approaches to promote improvements in polymer end-of-life. The role of biodegradation relative to recycling as a part of design will also be discussed.

Modern therapeutics are increasingly developed not only through innovation but through the ability to engineer, scale, and sustain complex systems that must function within the real-world constraints. This seminar will examine how engineering and entrepreneurship come together to drive the development of small molecules, biologics, and advanced cell and gene therapies, with a particular focus on cell therapy.

Based on experience founding and leading several biotechnology companies across different therapeutic areas, this presentation will address the decision-making processes involved in translating technologies from early development to clinical execution. Using real-world examples, it will explore how decisions related to process development, scale-up, manufacturability, quality systems, and regulatory approaches can influence feasibility, risk, and development timelines. The presentation will illustrate how engineering decisions, made early and properly, can enable successful development programs, while delayed and misaligned decisions can constrain both development and enterprise value.

The talk will conclude with a case study of an intelligent cell therapy orchestration platform, demonstrating how systems engineering, data integration, and automation can help overcome the bottlenecks in cell therapy manufacturing and delivery. The seminar aims to share perspectives on entrepreneurship in modern therapeutics and to show how engineering principles continue to drive innovation at the intersection of biology, medicine, and business.

The exhibition showcases more than 60 garments from the 1920s drawn from the Fashion and Textile Collection in the Fashion and Apparel Studies Department, along with digital twins, virtual reproductions of selected fragile garments.

In contrast to the restrictive Edwardian styles of the early 1910s, the chemise silhouette was more functional, offering women greater freedom of movement through its simpler shapes and rising hemlines. This simple silhouette and its variations provided a means of self-expression aesthetically, socially and culturally, as this period witnessed significant changes in women's clothing, driven by industrialization, women's suffrage and various artistic movements.

Fabrics and designs drew inspiration from Art Deco, jazz culture, Egyptian, African, Eastern European and Asian traditional dress, allowing women to convey their global awareness. At the same time, the expanding ready-to-wear industry made fashionable clothing more accessible than ever. Together, these forces cemented the 1920s as a pivotal moment in which clothing became a powerful medium for expressing individuality and freedom.

Swarthmore College

Dr. Joseph Towles is an Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering at Swarthmore College. His research focuses on investigating the kinematic and kinetic characteristics of the hand, with applications in the design of innovative surgical and rehabilitative strategies to restore precision and power grasping in individuals with neurologic impairment.In addition, Dr. Towles is committed to advancing engineering education by identifying effective, supportive approaches to engaging students in engineering concepts and experiences. His work aims to enhance student learning outcomes in both classroom and laboratory settings. He also serves as an Associate Editor of the Biomedical Engineering Education Journal and as an ABET Evaluator for biomedical engineering and bioengineering programs.

Seminar - Restoration of Hand Function Following Spinal Cord Injury Using a Novel Multiple Recipient Muscle Tendon Transfer Approach

Grasp deficits following cervical spinal cord injury significantly diminish the quality of life for up to 135,000 individuals worldwide each year. Tendon transfer surgery—typically involving the transfer of a donor muscle to the paralyzed long thumb flexor—is commonly used to restore lateral pinch between the thumb and index finger. However, surgical outcomes have been highly variable, with maximum pinch forces ranging from 1–2 N to values up to ten times greater.This variability may be due in part to the conventional single-recipient tendon transfer approach, in which the donor muscle is attached to the most anatomically and surgically favorable recipient muscle. While practical, this muscle may not provide optimal joint movement or endpoint force characteristics necessary for stable grasping.Computer simulation studies from Dr. Towles’ lab demonstrate that a novel multiple-recipient muscle tendon transfer approach can improve thumb-tip movement and force production during lateral pinch, compared to the current standard of care. This seminar will present research highlighting the promise of this innovative surgical strategy for restoring hand function following spinal cord injury. ABSTRACT

Training and deploying large deep-learning (DL) models face a memory capacity problem because of increasing model size or limited GPU memory capacity. Tiered memory architectures based on heterogeneous GPU/CPU memories provide a cost-effective solution to enable large DL models on GPU with limited memory. However, using tiered memory faces challenges on tensor management because of the dynamic structure of DL models and irregular memory accesses patterns in the DL workloads. In this talk, we introduce a learned approach (using a neural network or NN) to increase predictability of tensor accesses and facilitate memory management on tiered memory. To make the learned approach feasible, we address a series of challenges for NN feature representation to capture DL memory access patterns, and NN overhead control without sacrificing the effectiveness of NN guidance. Using the learned approach, we largely outperform UVM and tensor materialization (two approaches to enable large DL models on GPU) by 3× and 2.1× respectively in terms of maximum batch size. In the scenarios of industrial-scale deep-learning recommendation model (DLRM), our approach effectively reduces end-to-end DLRM inference time by up to 43%, compared to LRU caching in production.

BIOGRAPHY

Dong Li is an associate professor at EECS, University of California, Merced. Previously, he was a research scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), studying computer architecture and programming models for next generation supercomputer systems. Dong earned his PhD in computer science from Virginia Tech. His research focuses on high performance computing (HPC), and maintains a strong relevance to computer systems. Dong received an ORNL/CSMD Distinguished Contributor Award in 2013, a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2016, Facebook faculty research award in 2021, Oracle Research Award in 2022, Amazon Research Award in 2025. His paper in SC'14 was in the best paper final list. His paper in ASPLOS'21 won the distinguished artifact award. He was also the lead PI for the NVIDIA CUDA Research Center at UC Merced. He is an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS).

Join the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra, the UD Chorale, and Schola Cantorum for two unforgettable evenings of profound beauty and spiritual depth. Under the direction of conductor Paul Head, these performances bring together nearly 200 musicians to explore two of the most significant works in the choral-orchestral repertoire.

The Program
The evening opens with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Mass in C minor, K. 427. Often referred to as the "Great" Mass, it remains one of Mozart’s most ambitious and beloved works—a stunning fusion of Baroque majesty and operatic grace.
Following intermission, we transition to the contemporary brilliance of Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living. Unlike a traditional requiem for the deceased, Forrest’s five-movement work is a lush, cinematic prayer for peace and rest for those of us still living.

Join Delaware Sea Grant and Delaware State University to learn about Oyster Aquaculture efforts in Delaware’s Inland Bays. The program will begin with a two-hour boat tour leaving from the Grove Park Canal Dock in Rehoboth Beach. The tour will travel down the Rehoboth Lewes Canal to Rehoboth Bay. During the cruise, participants will learn about Delaware’s growing oyster aquaculture industry. In the afternoon, participants will meet at the University of Delaware’s Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, Delaware for a tour of the University’s new oyster hatchery.

Registration: This workshop is open to all educators. Teachers that attend will receive a $125 stipend. Snacks will be provided. Lunch will be on your own.

Through photographs, books, pamphlets and event programs, visitors will explore the rich and dynamic history of the Black church as a foundational educational institution, as well as the remarkable influence and activism of Black women working to expand educational opportunities, often in partnership with the independent Black church. Recognizing that 1776 is the beginning, not the end, of our American story, we invite you to discover how African Americans in Delaware built community, promoted education and thrived at the turn of the century in their ongoing pursuit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Lifting As We Climb is on view from February 2 through August 7, 2026, in the Morris Library Information Room. The exhibition is free and open to the public during the Library’s regular hours.

Partnering with various Delaware banks and federal credit unions, the CEEE has produced this ongoing in-school program in as many as 70 different elementary schools state-wide.

Through BAS, students can open free non-custodial, no-fee savings accounts and make weekly deposits on school premises, nurturing the ethic of saving.

The Delaware State Board of Education recently implemented K-12 financial literacy standards. Participation in BAS helps Delaware teachers address these standards.

The exhibition showcases more than 60 garments from the 1920s drawn from the Fashion and Textile Collection in the Fashion and Apparel Studies Department, along with digital twins, virtual reproductions of selected fragile garments.

In contrast to the restrictive Edwardian styles of the early 1910s, the chemise silhouette was more functional, offering women greater freedom of movement through its simpler shapes and rising hemlines. This simple silhouette and its variations provided a means of self-expression aesthetically, socially and culturally, as this period witnessed significant changes in women's clothing, driven by industrialization, women's suffrage and various artistic movements.

Join us on a historical journey following the story of the American Chestnut tree, its fall and hopeful rise, and the role of the Chinese Chestnut tree in its recovery. Participants will experience all parts of the tree through the opportunity to sample a bite of Italian Chestnut cake.

Following a careful meal plan is the first step in managing diabetes and keeping blood sugars in a therapeutic range. It is also the hardest step. Dining with Diabetes helps by teaching people with diabetes ways to reduce sugar, salt and fat in foods without giving up good taste.

PARTICIPANTS

People with diabetes and their family members, caregivers and support persons can enroll in Dining with Diabetes. Anyone, with or without diabetes, can attend. This program is designed to complement, not replace, diabetes management classes.

INSTRUCTORS

Classes are taught by University of Delaware Cooperative Extension staff.

Pattie McCarthy is the author of seven books of poetry: wifthing (2021), Quiet Book (2015), Marybones (2012), Table Alphabetical of Hard Words (2010), Verso (2004), and bk of (h)rs (2002); and Nulls (2014). She has also published over a dozen chapbooks, most recently three tides (2022) and extraordinary tides, winner of the 2021 Omnidawn Press Chapbook Contest (2023).

She was a Pew Fellow in the Arts in 2011. In summer 2013, McCarthy was an artist resident at the Elizabeth Bishop House in Great Village, Nova Scotia. A nontenure track professor, she has been teaching at Temple since 2004. She regularly teaches Introductory Poetry Workshop, Intermediate Poetry Workshop, Advanced Poetry Workshop, Senior Capstone, Modern Poetry, Contemporary Poetry, the Graduate Poetry Workshop, Graduate Craft in Poetry, and MFA Manuscript Tutorial. McCarthy is currently the assistant director of Temple's MFA in Creative Writing.

The award winning Graduate Percussion Group is a fully funded fellowship program. Each member is awarded a fellowship for their studies at UD by co-directing and performing in this ensemble. Coached and mentored by the faculty ensemble in residence (Quey Percussion Duo), the Graduate Percussion Group is actively engaged in artistic creativity on a daily basis through rehearsing, performing, and administration of a self-sustaining ensemble that straddles the line between collegiate and professional performing experiences.

The Graduate Percussion Group presents regular programs throughout the year in addition to numerous projects related to audio recording, video production, outreach, recruiting, competitions, and composer-performer experiences. Graduate Percussion Group members also often perform side-by-side with guest and faculty artists. In addition to performances, as a self-sustaining ensemble, each student will assume administrative roles to guarantee the success of the ensemble such as scheduling, programming, recruiting, outreach, marketing and promotion, and social media management to name a few.

The Delaware 4-H State Camp experience provides lasting memories and the chance to make lifelong friends. Surrounded by nature, campers disconnect from technology and focus on developing life skills. Campers are assigned to a people group for afternoon and campfire activities. Classes are created by counselors, in the past have consisted of kayaking, arts & crafts, home economics, sports and fitness and archery just to name a few! Recreation time, such as swimming, playing basketball and volleyball, and kayaking, are included, Campers may only attend one session.

4-H Environmental Camp — June 5-7, 2026

This residential overnight experience allows campers to explore basic soil and environmental science curriculum through hands-on discovery. Campers will attend classes that allow them to get their hands dirty, explore the creek, or look for critters around camp. Who knew it was so much fun! Previous camp classes included topics such as, “Is River Water Safe to Drink? and “Digging Up the Dirt on Soil Microbes.” New classes are developed every year. Recreation time, such as swimming, playing basketball and volleyball, and kayaking, are included.
