This concert will take you back to the very beginning of our medium—when percussion first stepped out of the background and claimed the spotlight. Featuring some of the first works ever written for percussion ensemble, this program celebrates the visionary composers who pioneered an entirely new musical language. At a time when Western percussion was rarely heard outside the orchestra’s back row, these innovators imagined an ensemble built entirely on rhythm, color, and texture—and changed the course of music history. From groundbreaking experiments in sound to electrifying rhythmic conversations, these early works are as daring and alive today as they were at their premieres.

Join us for an evening that honors the pioneers of the percussion ensemble repertoire in a rare chance to experience the origins of a musical revolution. The program will include works by Varese, Roldan, Cowell, Russell, and Beyer and feature John Cage’s rarely performed 1942 radio drama "The City Wears a Slouch Hat."

As a Graduate Student Teaching Assistant, his responsibilities are to help teach Music Education majors clarinet and saxophone in the Woodwind Methods and Materials course. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance and a Bachelor of Science in Information Science from the University of Maryland, College Park. He has experience performing abroad in Austria, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and England. Matt Vice is a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity and has performed with the Manassas Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Institute, and the Sterling Playmakers. Most recently, Matt Vice performed the Fin de la Tierra Clarinet Concerto by Jenni Brandon with the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra.

This performance is a Masters Degree Recital to partially fulfill the requirements of a Master of Music degree.

Join the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra, the UD Chorale, and Schola Cantorum for two unforgettable evenings of profound beauty and spiritual depth. Under the direction of conductor Paul Head, these performances bring together nearly 200 musicians to explore two of the most significant works in the choral-orchestral repertoire.

The Program
The evening opens with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Mass in C minor, K. 427. Often referred to as the "Great" Mass, it remains one of Mozart’s most ambitious and beloved works—a stunning fusion of Baroque majesty and operatic grace.
Following intermission, we transition to the contemporary brilliance of Dan Forrest’s Requiem for the Living. Unlike a traditional requiem for the deceased, Forrest’s five-movement work is a lush, cinematic prayer for peace and rest for those of us still living.
