Mather Visiting Scholars Lecture, presented by Ruth DeFries, Denning Family University Professor of Sustainable Development, Columbia University and co-founding Dean Emerita, Columbia Climate School.
Climate resilience of food systems has emerged as an existential need for human societies. Increasing diversity and recovery of traditional crops is a key component of climate resilience. Millets – a cereal crop that has been neglected in modern agriculture – are traditional stalwarts of humanity’s diets that are currently undergoing a revival. Based on field work and engagement with local communities in one geography in central India, this talk will focus on the scientific, cultural, and political realities of making this revival successful.
Lecture will take place at Mitchell Hall, with a reception to follow in the Mitchell Hall Lobby. Registration is required for this event. Please register by Nov. 13th at this link: https://ud.alumniq.com/index.cfm/events:register/home/eventId/8917. For questions, please contact Stephanie Hanson at smhanson@udel.edu.
