Please join us for the 2025 John R. Mather Lecture, "The Challenges and Opportunities of Climate Change" presented by Dr. Jonathan T. Overpeck, the Samuel A. Graham Dean of the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan, on Thursday, November 6th at 5:00pm. The lecture will take place at Gore Recital Hall, with a reception to follow at 6:15pm in the Lerner Atrium.

Climate change is a growing global challenge that requires building a more sustainable and just world. Rising global emissions of greenhouse gases drive ever more climate change, increasing the risk of extreme weather and climate impacts like heat waves, extreme rainfall and flooding, unprecedented storms, droughts, wildfires and more. Sea level rise is accelerating as the ocean warms and expands, and as the polar ice sheets continue to lose mass. It appears that the planet is being pushed closer to climate tipping points, but there are many reasons to have hope.

To start, we know the causes of climate change and we are deploying many of the necessary solutions. The primary solution is to end the burning of fossil fuels and to generate all the world’s energy using low-carbon technologies, including solar, wind and battery storage. Unlike fossil fuels, the costs associated with these low-carbon technologies continue to plummet, and thus, a successful global energy transition will increase the affordability of electricity and mobility. As we continue to drive innovation to accelerate the transition, we must also work to ensure a just transition and speed the development of climate-resilient countries and communities. This will provide the opportunity for economic growth while dealing with one of the greatest challenges the globe has ever faced, but it will require international cooperation and coordination like never before.
