Accounting & MIS Distinguished Speaker Series: Dr. Suprateek Sarker
Suprateek Sarker (“Supra”) is Rolls-Royce Commonwealth Commerce Professor (Information Technology) at the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce, and he teaches courses on data management, systems analysis and design, management of digital organizations, and qualitative research approaches. He was formerly the Philip Kays Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at Washington State University.
Professor Sarker's research, which is largely qualitative in nature, has been published in such journals as MIS Quarterly; Information Systems Research; Journal of Management Information Systems; Journal of the Association of Information Systems; IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management; Information & Organization; European Journal of Information Systems; Decision Support Systems, Information Systems Journal; Journal of Strategic Information Systems; Journal of Information Technology; Information Technology & People; MIS Quarterly Executive; Communications of the AIS; Communications of the ACM; ACM Transactions on MIS; ACM Data Base; IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication; IEEE Software; Decision Sciences Journal; and Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, as well as the Institute for the Study of Business Markets.
He serves on the editorial boards of a number of journals, including Journal of the AIS (as editor-in-chief), MIS Quarterly (currently active as a senior editor emeritus), Journal of MIS (as a member of the Board of Editors), IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management (as an editorial board member), and Information Technology & People (as an editorial advisory board member). He is also a past editor-in-chief of Journal of Information Technology Case and Application Research, and a past senior editor of Decision Sciences Journal.
Professor Sarker has held visiting professorships or visiting scholar positions at Royal Holloway University of London (University of London Chair of Technology & Information Management, part time) (United Kingdom); Helsinki School of Economics, Mikkeli, University of Oulu, Aalto University, Helsinki (as Distinguished Visiting Professor, summer terms) (Finland); Copenhagen Business School (as Microsoft Chair of Information Systems) (Denmark); Vaxjo University (Sweden); National Economics University (Vietnam); Cesar Ritz University Center (Switzerland); University of Kassel, University of Mannheim (Germany); University of New South Wales, University of Sydney (Australia); National Cheng Kung University (Taiwan), and has upcoming short appointments at the University of Auckland (New Zealand), University of Cape Town, and Nelson Mandela University (South Africa), among others. He has also served as doctoral dissertation examiner for scholars in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and South Africa. He has been invited to be keynote speaker at a number of prominent conferences in Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America.
In 2006, Professor Sarker was a co-recipient of the Stafford Beer Medal from the Operational Research Society (United Kingdom) for work on virtual teamwork published in European Journal of Information Systems. He has earned teaching awards at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In August 2016, the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) conferred on Professor Sarker an honorary doctorate; in December 2017, he was named a Fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS); and in April 2018, he was named Distinguished Alumnus of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems Department, University of Cincinnati, where he completed his Ph.D. studies in 1997.
