Evolution of optical biosensor systems
- Frances S. Ligler, D.Phil., D.Sc. is the Eppright Chair in Biomedical
Engineering after holding a similar position at NC State/UNC-Chapel Hill.
Before 2013, she spent 28 years at the Naval Research Laboratory,
including 18 as Senior Scientist for Biosensors and Biomaterials. Her
patents (38) have led to 11 commercial biosensor products. She is a Fellow
of SPIE, AIMBE, NAI and AAAS, elected to the National Academy of
Engineering in 2005 (2020 NAE Simon Ramo Founders Award). She has
received Presidential Rank Awards from Presidents Bush (2003) and
Obama (2012). She is a 2017 inductee of the U.S. National Inventors Hall
of Fame, honored for her invention of portable optical biosensors.
