In a time of global misinformation, the University of Delaware presents a conversation about the importance of free and independent journalism with Leila Fadel, host of National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, and Ralph Begleiter, former CNN World Affairs correspondent and founding director of UD’s Center for Political Communication. 

Fadel also serves as a national and international correspondent for NPR, winning numerous awards for her work. She has consistently reported on the fault lines of our nation, including on policing and race, on American Muslim communities and on the jarring inequities the coronavirus exposed in the healthcare system. Overseas, she covers the Middle East, producing stories on the rise of extremism, the return of authoritarianism, and the aftermath of a wave of uprisings in 2011.

Begleiter spent two decades with CNN, earning the distinction of being the network’s most widely traveled correspondent. The UD Rosenberg Professor of Communication Emeritus, he founded the Center for Political Communication in 2010, creating distinguished programs such as Global Agenda and National Agenda.

The evening marks World Press Freedom Day and is hosted by UD Journalism and Delaware Public Media. The annual Byline event is supported by the E. A Nickerson lecture fund which is designed to bring prominent journalists to campus to share their experiences with UD students.

A former reporter and editor for the Associated Press, Edward Nickerson joined UD's faculty in 1970. Countless UD Journalism graduates credit their experience in Nickerson's classroom as a roadmap to their success in the field.
