"Magnetic Metamaterials: order and dynamics"
Presented by Dr. Vassilios Kapaklis, Professor, from Uppsala University, Sweden
Advances in nano-lithographic processing now allow the fabrication of lattices of patterned ferroic materials—magnetic metamaterials—composed of sub-micron elements. These systems exhibit emergent collective behavior arising from the interactions between individual building blocks, providing a platform for novel functionalities. The resulting metamaterial properties differ fundamentally from those of the constituents, being dictated primarily by geometry and lattice arrangement. Their dynamic response can be driven by magnetic fields, light, or temperature, opening versatile avenues for control. In this talk, I will outline design strategies for realizing artificial lattices with unconventional magnetic ordering, discuss the fundamentals of their magnetization dynamics, and highlight potential applications in optics and plasmonics.
