Dr. Changlu Wang (9:00 - 10:50)
Dr. Wang's research program focuses on developing new and improved urban pest management technologies through the study of biology, behavior, and ecology of urban pests. The goal is to identify cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions that will immediately benefit the consumers. My extension program delivers research-based urban pest management technologies to pest management professionals and the public through presentations, field demonstrations, and extension publications.
Managing House Mouse Infestation in Apartment Buildings: House mice are the 2nd most abundant indoor pest in a recent survey. Understanding their feeding behavior and special distribution patterns in multi-unit dwellings will help achieve more effective control of this important pest. A combination of snap trapping, baiting, and exclusion provides more effective control of house mice than baiting alone. Overcoming Challenges in Bed Bug Control: Many challenges exist in bed bug control jobs. This presentation discusses bed bug insecticide resistance, effective materials and methods that help overcome the insecticide resistance and the lack of client cooperation.
Break from 10:50 - 11:00
Mr. John Emerson (11:00 - 11:50)
Mr. Emerson is a Turfgrass and Ornamental Extension Agent for the University of Delaware with 17 years of industry experience and 4 years of experience in academia. His current research is related to the improvement of nutrient recommendations for turfgrass systems. He has a split appointment between the DE Pesticide Safety & Education Program (PSEP) and the DE Nutrient Management Program. Mr. Emerson facilitates initial trainings prior to certification as well as multiple continuing education events throughout the year for both programs. He works with various industry professionals to mold his events to the needs of the attendees to address areas of weakness or where a deeper understanding is sought.
The Mathematics of Pesticide Applications: Having the ability to consistently and accurately calculate the amount of product needed for any particular job is not only important to achieve the desired level of control, but if done incorrectly, applications can turn into costly economic mistakes. This talk will cover basic and practical pesticide calculations that are indicative of scenarios applicators would encounter in the field.
