ADAPTIVE GEOGRAPHY IN GREENLAND'S MINERAL FRONTIER
Presented by Dr. Saleem Ali & Thomas Hale
Department of Geography and Spatial Sciences, University of Delaware
Rising demand for critical materials to support the energy transition and a changing climate have increased pressure on mineral development in the Arctic. This presentation will provide a synopsis of the summer fieldwork conducted by Dr. Saleem Ali and Thomas Hale in Greenland as part of a larger National Science Foundation incubator project called Sustainable Transitions through Arctic Redevelopment (STAR). The presenters will highlight photographs and stories from their fieldwork, discuss the potential of geotourism in southern Greenland, share stories from one of the most secretive mining operations during World War II, and bring mineral specimens for the audience to engage with. You will not want to miss out on this interdisciplinary talk bringing both geology, geography, and international affairs together to better understand developments in the Arctic.
