Title:
Energy Variational Modeling and Axisymmetric Simulation of Open Membranes in Stokes Flow
Abstract:
In this talk, we present a mathematical and numerical framework for modeling the dynamics of open lipid bilayer membranes immersed in a viscous fluid governed by Stokes flow. Starting from an energy variational principle incorporating Helfrich bending energy and line tension, we derive a coupled system describing the fluid–membrane interaction, subject to area incompressibility and membrane viscosity. Assuming axisymmetry, we reduce the 3D problem to an effectively 1D boundary integral formulation and develop a finite element-based numerical scheme to simulate the moving boundary problem. Numerical results demonstrate the model’s ability to capture membrane dynamics and validate it against known theoretical predictions.
