Title: What does it take to be a tech entrepreneur?
A tech startup is often viewed as a mythical unicorn that emerges from nowhere to solve a fundamental problem in a new and elegant way that no one thought possible. They are led by heroic founders such as a Elon Musk, Steve Jobs, or Bill Gates whose clear vision brought them to success through a series of clearly thought out steps. The reality is that technology entrepreneurship requires hard work, long hours, and perseverance often without a clear path to success. Most successful entrepreneurs create plans that are modified continuously until they finally find a niche. Dr. Rishi Khan, a University of Delaware Alumni and local tech entrepreneur, will discuss what it takes to be a tech entrepreneur. He will describe his citcuituous path to running a successful business and provide you with a list of skills you will need to succeed. Come for the food. Leave with the knowledge you’ll need to take action and make your idea a success.
Rishi Khan graduated from University of Delaware with a Bachelors of Science in Computer and Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Computational Biology. Throughout his studies he ran several ’side hustles’. After his PhD he spent one year as a postdoctoral researcher running a company that built DNA sequencing technology funded by NIH SBIR grants. Then he worked for a high performance computing startup, ET International, building system software and runtime systems for supercomputers. In 2014, he started Extreme Scale Solutions to focus on the convergence of big data and high-performance computing. After a series of twists and turns, the company coalesced around enterprise infrastructure automation and capacity management.
