How Hearing Happens - Some Essentials
Abstract
Hearing is a complex process. It begins with sound entering the outer ear, but the biological component originates in the inner ear, specifically the cochlea. The so-called cochlear curtain is the point at which several brain centers become involved. The earliest of these are located in the brainstem, and one such center is the “S-segment” or “Lateral Superior Olive”. The microcircuit surrounding the S-segment is characterized by the integration of excitatory and inhibitory connections, with neuronal synapses optimized for resilience, reliability, and precision. The lecture will address how these remarkable properties arise and how the synapses perform in the young and aged brain.
