Andrew Furco
Andrew Furco is Professor of Higher Education at the University of Minnesota, where he is also Director of the International Center for Research on Community Engagement. At the University of Minnesota, he also served as the Associate Vice President for Public Engagement
for 14 years (2008-2021), leading the University's agenda to institutionalize community engagement across the institution's research, teaching, and public service activities. Prior to arriving in Minnesota, Dr. Furco worked for 17 years at the University of California-Berkeley as the founding director of the Service-Learning Research and Development Center and as a faculty member in the Graduate School of Education.
Dr. Furco's scholarly work focuses on examining the role of service-learning and community engagement practices in primary, secondary, and higher education systems in the U.S. and abroad. He has led more than 30 studies focused on issues pertaining to the impacts, implementation, and institutionalization of community engagement practice. He has consulted with more than 100 universities in more than 30 countries on issues pertaining to the advancement and institutionalization of community engagement, service- learning, and community-engaged scholarship. His publications include four books and more than 100 journal articles and book chapters that explore the study and practice of student community engagement, faculty engaged scholarship, and the institutionalization of community engagement in higher education.
He is the recipient of a number of awards for his research and leadership on community engagement practices and community-engaged scholarship.
In 2015, he was inducted into the Academy of Community Engagement Scholarship. Just this past year, he was awarded two lifetime achievement awards from national associations: the Alec Dickson Lifetime Achievement Award for Service-Learning from the National Youth Leadership Council and the John S. Duley Lifetime Achievement Award in Experiential Education, from the National Society for Experiential Education.
