The Department of Women and Gender Studies presents the Delaware premiere of Surviving Pulse: Life After A Mass Shooting, an award-winning documentary about the second deadliest mass shooting in American history. Pulse was a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida and on the night of June 12, 2016 a gunman opened fire on the crowd, killing 49 people. The attack has been called an act of terrorism against the LGBTQ community.
The film features interviews with survivors of the tragedy and families of the victims, talking about how the club was a safe place where patrons could be themselves, free from judgment and discrimination about their sexuality and/or race.
The screening is the final film in the annual Women’s History Film Series and is open to the public. The series’ theme is a uniquely American form of violence—gun violence.
Related Event - the film provides additional context for the Ida B. Wells lecture, Violence, An American Tradition? on Tuesday, March 11 at 4 p.m. in Mitchell Hall. Brandon Wolf, Pulse survivor and a nationally recognized LGBTQ civil rights advocate and leader in the movement to end gun violence, will share his story and his work to make the world a safer place.
Registration is required and can be found on the registration form for the the Ida B. Wells lecture.
