First Step Presentations and Awards

This is a past event

Eight student teams will pitch their innovative solutions to solving a health, societal or enviromental challenge to a group of judges in the hopes of winning seed money to take their ideas, prototypes and models to the next level. New this year: attendees will get to vote for a People’s Choice Award.

Topics include:

  • Increasing nutrition throughout the life span through accessibility to healthy foods
  • Wearables to decrease anxiety
  • Technology to alleviate transportation issues for people with disabilities
  • Creation of on campus resources focused on addiction and prevention.

The 2018 winning team received $5,000 to further develop Helping Hands for stroke victims. The students, a mix from the College of Engineer and the College of Health Sciences, developed a wearable device that augments physical therapy for patients’ hands by stretching and building muscle strength.

The First Step Experience is sponsored by the College of Health Sciences, in partnership with Horn Entrepreneurship. Admission is free but registration is requested.
