Kerfuffle, one-off, curate. While the words all mean something different, they have one thing in common - all are British expressions that are part of "American" English. Professor Emeritus of English Ben Yagoda will examine these and many other Britishisms that are part of language on "this side of the pond" during a special conversation about his new book, Gobsmacked! The British Invasion of American English on Tuesday, March 4 at 5:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall, room 111.

Yagoda is the author or editor of more than a dozen books. He has written articles, essays and reviews for the New York Times, Esquire, Rolling Stone, the Chronicle of Higher Education and many other publications. He has degrees in English and American Civilization from Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Yagoda joined the University of Delaware in 1992 as a professor of journalism and retired in December of 2016. He has been a Guggenheim and MacDowell Fellow.

The event is hosted by the Department of English.
