High-Performance Computing (HPC): A Scientific and Economic Weapon

 

Parallel HPC has evolved over the past several decades from a scientific curiosity to a broad enabler of computational, data-intensive, and AI-driven research and engineering projects. The first Nobel Prize for computational methods in 2013 established HPC as a first-rate tool for advancing scientific frontiers. Today, powerful computer-based methods catalyze progress and enable new scientific endeavors from traditional computational physics topics to innovations in arts and humanities. What's more, the National Strategic Computing Initiative has called this technology an "economic weapon". This talk will comment on the history as well as on current UD activities in HPC and enabled science projects. It will close with thoughts on future opportunities and challenges for science, engineering, and society that are increasingly driven by information technology.

 

BIOGRAPHY
Rudolf “Rudi” Eigenmann is a Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His core research interests include cyberinfrastructure design, programming methodologies, compiler optimization, and high performance computing (HPC) systems and applications. His lab’s research goals include upgrading the Delaware region’s cyberinfrastructure, designing a comprehensive standard for measuring the speed of HPC systems, and innovating automatic parallelization. Eigenmann serves on the advisory boards for the Molecular Sciences Software Institute and the Institute for Advanced Computational Science. Eigenmann earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering/computer science from ETH Zurich, Switzerland. 

 

Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Rudi Eigenmann will present his lecture followed by a reception in Du Pont Hall lobby immediately following.
