The Fall 2024 Norton Lecture will be delivered by Sean Carroll, Homewood Professor of Natural Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University and Fractal Faculty and Professor at the Santa Fe Institute.

This year's event is a collaboration between the University of Delaware's Department of Philosophy and the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Carroll’s upcoming lecture, "Is There More Than Physics?" will explore the interplay between physics and philosophy:

We all have atoms inside our bodies. And modern physics understands atoms very well –- what they are made of and how they behave. Is physics enough to ultimately explain life, consciousness, and the rest of the universe? I will argue that higher-level "emergent" phenomena should be compatible with physics as we currently understand it, without the need for any new ingredients or modifications. But I will also explore more elaborate forms of emergence and discuss how they might be relevant in more general contexts.

This event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the lobby.

This lecture is sponsored by the David Norton Memorial Fund honoring the late UD Philosophy Professor.
