Laci Green: A Discussion About Rape Culture
Laci Green is a YouTuber, public speaker, and activist from Oakland. She is best known as the woman behind the internet’s most popular sex education show: Sex Plus. Sex Plus reaches 5 million young adults every month and is viewed in all 196 countries. In 2011, Laci graduated with highest honors from UC Berkeley and currently holds a certificate in rape and dating violence crisis counseling. Since graduating, she has worked with over 100 universities, conferences, military groups, and government offices on sexual health and sexual violence prevention efforts. She is also the host/writer of MTV Braless and produces an educational series for Planned Parenthood.
Special Interest Greek Council and our co-sponsors are bringing Laci to UD to talk about rape culture, how it's perpetuated in the media, on college campuses, etc., and things you can do to stop it. Especially in today's social and political climate, it is important to talk about the things in the media and the things we see our peers do that perpetuate rape culture. The fact that some people truly believe that "rape culture is a myth" shows that some people are uneducated to the reality that is the number of reported and unreported rapes that occur on college campuses, as well as how many that are reported that are mishandled by law enforcement, and universities across this country. University of Delaware has already taken a lot of steps towards improving their response to these cases; educating about what sexual misconduct is, and how to respond if someone reports one to you. The next step from here is education and conversation that continues beyond that "Our UD" meeting all freshmen are required to attend. Someone like Laci can help to diversify the conversation as well as to bring an outside perspective to rape culture that goes beyond this campus.
