Library Exhibits "Books Acquired in Honor of William Swayze"
The University of Delaware Library [www.udel.edu/library] announces a new exhibition, “Books Acquired in Honor of William Swayze,” which will be on view through December 13, 2013 in the Lincoln case located adjacent to Special Collections on the Second Floor of the Morris Library.
As a result of a generous donation from the Delaware Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, the University of Delaware Library acquired a collection of more than seventy historic Civil War era pamphlets and other publications which are designated to be in memory of William W. Swayze III. Mr. Swayze was a longtime member of the Lincoln Club of Delaware who served as president of the Club in 1977 and played an important role in Lincoln Club activities for many years. Mr. Swayze was a lifelong resident of Wilmington, Delaware and received his B.A. degree in Business Administration from the University of Delaware in 1938. He passed away on October 26, 2009 at the age of 93.
This significant addition to the Lincoln Collection features fiery political speeches, scarce abolitionist tracts, pro-confederacy publications, Confederate imprints, autobiographical works and much more. The exhibition was curated by Timothy Murray, head of the Special Collections Department. Library users may visit [www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/lincoln] for more information.
