Astronomy & Space Physics Seminar
New views of the outer heliosphere
This astronomy and space physics seminar is being presented by Dr. Marc Swisdak from the University of Maryland.
Voyager 1, launched in 1977, is the farthest manmade object from Earth and recently entered into interstellar space. Although its primary mission of exploring Jupiter and Saturn ended in 1980, it has continued to take data including (with its sister spacecraft Voyager 2) the only measurements of the outer heliosphere, the region beyond the termination shock at which the solar wind abruptly slows. I will discuss some of the many surprising discoveries related to the outer heliosphere, including the source of anomalous cosmic rays and the peculiar plasma velocities and suggest how magnetic reconnection can provide a possible explanation. The recent crossing of heliopause -- including how that determination was made and why it took a year to recognize -- will also be discussed.
