Hidden Histories: Introducing “Black Histories at UD,” an Interactive StoryMap Virtual Campus Tour

UDARI (University of Delaware Anti-Racism Initiative) invites you to explore UD’s untold Black histories through our unveiling of an interactive digital public history project. Created by UD students, this StoryMap* allows us to learn more about African American experiences’ at UD from the antebellum era of enslavement, through segregation, integration, protest, and campus and student life.

Hidden Histories: Introducing “Black Histories at UD” will feature UDARI student intern Alenoush Davis, along with University of Delaware and Newark community members, who will guide you through an introduction of the StoryMap campus tour.

Wednesday, December 4th, 3:00pm

Prior to the event, we welcome and encourage you to explore and share the StoryMap

* The StoryMap connects previously under-studied histories, now coming to light thanks to ongoing work by UDARI researchers and community partners, to specific sites on UD’s Newark campus and the city of Newark. A dynamic resource to which future researchers can add, the StoryMap can continue to accrue layers of history and be updated with new findings.

This digital project is a step toward realigning UD’s campus history to honor Black stories, while acknowledging the ways that the University of Delaware has benefitted historically from unfreedom and perpetuated racism. The Black Histories at UD committee continues to work toward commemorating Black histories at the University of Delaware more widely and in more permanent and visible ways, including oral histories, exhibits, and plaques on campus.
