Deborah Willis, PH.D, is University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. She has an affiliated appointment with the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Social & Cultural Analysis, Africana Studies. A practicing artist, renowned scholar, educator and curator, Deborah Willis has shaped the study of Black photography across the globe.

A recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship, Willis is the author of more than twenty books, including the just published, The Black Civil War Soldier: A Visual History of Conflict and Citizenship, NYU Press, 2021.
