About this Event

https://international.udel.edu/DB/PUB_Program.aspx?Pgm=2535 #UDAbroadGiven its 11 official languages and the transition from Apartheid to Post-apartheid, South Africa is a land of contrasts that provides the opportunity for students to become exposed to a culture that is not only rich in diversity, but also continues to be a work-in-progress as it comes to grips with social issues such as HIV/AIDS, poverty, and education. It is, some argue, a first-world country and a third-world country simultaneously.
All students will take HDFS 335 (Culture in Context) which will consist of an overview of the History of South Africa, taught by a South African historian and professor from the Univ. of Pretoria, as well as a range of cultural excursions and guest speakers to provide students with greater insight into South Africa's history and culture. In addition students will enroll in either HDFS 334 (Experiential Education)/HDFS 365 or HOSP 316 (International Etiquette and Protocol). This program will also include a mandatory service-learning placement which will be completed both in Pretoria and Cape Town, cultural excursions (including Soweto; a Safari game lodge).
Please note: only those applicants who have attended an interest meeting will be considered for acceptance. Information sessions provide essential program details, and attendance is taken.
