Come and discover the life and legacy of Dr. James E. Newton, founding director of what is today known as the Department of Africana Studies, distinguished UD faculty member, artist, educator, community leader, and activist. Co-curated by Art History doctoral student, Carolyn Hauk, the exhibition “The Artistic Legacy of James E. Newton: Heritage and Character Portraits” provides a glimpse into the incredible career and creative works of this remarkable artist and self-proclaimed “serious doodler.”

Visitors also will have the opportunity to explore a selection of doodles and sketches from Newton’s personal archive, which was recently acquired by Special Collections. Curators and former students and colleagues will be on hand as visitors interact with the art and archival material and a “doodling” station will be available for anyone interested in sketching in the gallery.

Admission is free. Please register for planning purposes.
