The Cultural Politics of Heritage in China and the Southeastern U.S.: Whose Heritage Counts and Who Decides
From international and national constructions of “heritage” to the less official vernacular ideas about what heritage is, coming to an agreement about whose heritage counts and how can be confusing--and sometimes contentious--process. Drawing on histories of heritage among different cultural groups in China, as well as among Gullah-Geechee people and those living in Appalachian regions in the southeastern United States, we will consider how heritage evolves over time and in different contexts. Finally, we will examine how definitions impact those whose heritage is at stake.
