This field day is for individuals who work in the lawn care and landscaping industry.

 

We will cover several topics which are highlighted below in the agenda. Nutrient management and pesticide credits will be available.  If you would like credits from surrounding states please reach out to John Emerson as soon as possible. Lunch will be served at the end and there will be coffee available at check-in.

We are excited to show you some of the turfgrass research and demonstration plots we have going and to expand your general knowledge of turfgrass management. Tours will begin at 9:00 am and check-in will start at 8:15 am. Be prepared for any weather conditions. We will not cancel unless the weather conditions are severe.

 

Parking will be on the University of Delaware Research Farm located on Farm Ln. Use the address of 501 S. College Ave. Newark, DE 19716 and then follow the parking signs.

Farmhouse Site

 

  • Introduction to the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) 
  • Local performance of 3 different zoysiagrass cultivars
  • Soil amendments - compost vs. sand topdressing for turfgrass systems (2 locations)
  • Centipedegrass and its potential uses in the urban landscape (2 locations)
  • Fine fescue low-input native meadows and their management

Allen Lab Site

  • Low-input lawns - Micro-clover mixed with turfgrasses as a lawn?
  • Effects of compost topdressing on tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass 
  • Fine fescue NTEP shade trial
  • Certified Turfgrass Breeders Trial (CTBT) 
  • Bermudagrass control strategies with herbicides prior to turfgrass renovation  establishment
  • Soil testing demonstration
