AI Engineering with Dr. Austin Brockmeier
Drawing from his own career journey—which began with a computer engineering internship using computer vision to diagnose locomotive cameras and led to a Ph.D. applying machine learning to neuroscience data—Dr. Brockmeier will illustrate how real-world challenges and technology have driven the advancements in artificial intelligence and discuss how engineers use AI to model complex systems, optimize designs, and create adaptive solutions for a changing world. Dr. Brockmeier will demystify core concepts, providing clear definitions of technical jargon: Supervised, Unsupervised, and Reinforcement Learning, Artificial Neural Networks and Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs), and Generative AI. AI is already being applied across disciplines, from enhancing imaging and communication systems in electrical engineering and optimizing chip design in computer engineering, to analyzing attacks and securing systems in cybersecurity engineering. The session will also address the evolution of the engineering job market in the age of AI, emphasizing the need for foundational knowledge, clear communication, and the ability to leverage AI as a powerful tool. Finally, he will overview the new bachelor's degree in AI Engineering. This talk is essential for any undergraduate looking to understand the technologies that will define their career.
