Join us to learn about the summer projects our interns have undertaken and exciting updates on our Townsend East Lawn and Garden expansion project. After the presentation, enjoy a delightful garden stroll with a complimentary scoop of ice cream from UDairy Creamery. This event is free to our donors and members, with reserved parking in the Townsend Lot.

Cultivating Wellness at Nemours

Nemours Estate has undergone a massive shift in the visitor experience of the property, both in operations and interpretation, all in order to serve their primary audience, the patients and families of Nemours Children's Hospital. Ken will speak to the organization’s journey to becoming its most authentic version of itself, and along the way find the power in well-being.

Ken Darsney is the Manager of Gardens and Grounds for Nemours Estate, the former home of Alfred I. duPont. Ken and his team oversee the care of the 300-acre property, which ranges from large-scale French-style formal gardens to native woodlands, and everything in between. Prior to this position, Ken was the Horticultural Supervisor for the State of Delaware’s Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, overseeing the stewardship of the landscapes of over 40 historic properties throughout the State.

Among Beatrix Potter’s many accomplishments, she produced exquisite renderings of flowers and detailed botanical illustrations. The lecture showcases her work and explores the various plants and their influence in her life, gardens, and beloved children’s books. Whether you are a lover of plants, Peter Rabbit, or Potter herself, you find something to appreciate in her art of flora and fungi.

Marta McDowell teaches landscape history and horticulture at the New York Botanical Garden and is a popular lecturer and writer. The recent publication of Beatrix Potter’s Botanical follows her 2023 book Gardening Can Be Murder, which explores the horticultural connections to crime fiction. Timber Press also published Unearthing The Secret Garden, Emily Dickinson's Gardening Life, The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder, New York Times-bestselling All the Presidents' Gardens, and Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life, now in its ninth printing. She was the 2019 recipient of the Garden Club of America's Sarah Chapman Francis Medal for outstanding literary achievement.
